Evolving Modern English Country Garden Design and Build. Formal Harrogate Garden.
Let’s face it, gardens evolve over time.. and I’m not just talking about planting either. Gardens evolve… how we use the space changes as we go from busy couples to full on families, to retirement… How involved we want to be in caring for the garden (all hands up who just wants one of those robotic mowers to cut the lawn whilst we sip G&T on the patio?) whether that be just enjoying it with friends and a BBQ or whether we like to potter or go full on Good Life and start growing our own veggies.
So getting to grips with this garden was interesting to say the least. The property is an old converted forge near Harrogate some of which dates back to the 16th century. It sits in a lovely decent sized plot, most of which had been landscaped by the previous owners in a very classic style. The owners decided to update the planting with a more of a contemporary bent predominantly in a green architectural style with some bold seasonal colour with repeated drifts of single variety species. Working alongside Trillium Gardens, the scheme was intended to read as a more modern experience of a classic formal garden but with some clean lines, long vistas, a lime tree avenue and lots of meandering woodland paths.
To create a big visual impact, we built a bespoke slate roof arbour to enjoy early evening summer sunshine and incorporated lots of York stone to blend harmoniously with the house. This garden is meant to sit in the landscape as naturally as possible with lots of hidden nooks and crannies and exciting places to explore. The planting softens the stone as it drifts across the hard landscaping and provides little glimpses of the main property. It remains classic with simple understated wow factor with little twists of modern flourish.
