With modern contemporary gardens getting smaller and smaller, it’s important that your outdoor space gives you as much bang for your buck as possible – this means aesthetically and, more importantly, usability. Vicki and Steve’s garden was a bit unloved before we started the project. The kids trampoline had taken over as the focal point, the grass was looking a bit worse for wear, and a tiny summerhouse that was too small and didn’t reflect the clients taste. Time to get out the pencils and design a space that Vicki and Steve could entertain in but at the same time, wouldn’t warrant too much maintenance (because quite frankly, we’d all rather be drinking a glass of gin in the evening rather than dead heading plants and digging up weeds!).
Our main objective was to create a garden that was stylish yet still practical, with defined areas or ‘rooms’ making it a desirable and comfortable destination that offers something for the whole family to enjoy. We drew up a gorgeous cool planting palette or purples, grey and blues, and set the boys on transforming this neglected patch into something amazing.
First of all, we stripped out the old lawn and saved the few shrubs that were still viable. Then it was time to put down the hard landscaping. The Pergola was repositioned from its shady corner into the middle of the garden to create a striking focal point, as well as providing a support for new Clematis, and giving light shade to the new patio.
Beautiful grey sandstone slabs and pavers enhanced the grey in the house bricks and gave us the backbone of our colour scheme, whilst contrasting sandy coloured gravelled areas divided up each distinct area.
And here we have it… the neglected lawn has gone in favour of high quality astro turf, built in benches provide extra seating for parties and gatherings, each area has been redefined and there’s lots to look at as you wander from each ‘room’. Some brightly coloured bean bag lounge chairs which can be moved from one area to the next, keep the garden usable and create a feeling of modernity and relaxation, not to mention giving a bit of pop amongst the green. A formal seating area under the patio is a great spot for BBQs and summer evening dinner and drinks. Success!
